Hello, everyone.
This is Mari , SAKURATIPS.
This is a Japanese language listening program for those who are studying Japanese.
I will speak Japanese slowly.

Today’s theme is about Setsubun.

Do you know what Setsubun is?
February 3rd is the day of Setsubun.
However, it varies from year to year, so in 2021, it was February 2nd.

During Setsubun, we eat ehomaki.
Ebomaki is a thick sushi roll.
It has seven different ingredients inside.
We eat it in silence.

Every year, we face a certain direction and eat it in silence.
We must not talk until we finish eating.
Then we throw the beans.
We throw the beans to keep the demons from coming into our house.

The word “oni” refers to the evil spirits.
When I was a little girl, my father wore a demon mask and we would throw beans for Setsubun.
He would throw the beans while saying, “Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi.

Setsubun means to divide the seasons.
There are four seasons in Japan, so we divide the seasons.
February 3rd is considered to be the beginning of spring.

It is still cold, but I will do my best to believe that spring will come soon.

Well, that’s it for today.
Thank you for listening to me again today.
I’ll see you tomorrow.

Im glad if you support me to make podcast!
